With MicroStation Productivity Toolkit, help is there when you need it.

Thursday, 7 June 2007

Clearwater, Florida, USA — Sometimes there’s not enough time in the day to resolve MicroStation issues and get your design work done. That can mean working nights and weekends to make deadlines. That’s bearable once in a while, but it’s no way to live, is it? Well, in case you hadn’t heard yet, there’s a suite of software products specially designed to provide you the MicroStation help, speed and efficiency you need, when you need it — Axiom’s MicroStation Productivity Toolkit.

Design file corruption emergencies? Violations of CAD standards? Deadlines threatened by time-consuming tasks? With MicroStation Productivity Toolkit, you will have all the tools you need to quickly handle MicroStation emergencies.

Axiom has versions of Toolkit available for both V7 and V8 MicroStation users. The tools contained in each Toolkit undergo continuous updates and improvements so that they can meet your changing needs. Here are some of the breakthroughs achieved in just the past 100 days:

It’s not possible to describe all the new releases and enhancements in the space available here. (So call for an online demonstration!)

  • FileFixer for V8 now handles all major categories of V8 design file corruption discovered in customer files. FileFixer for V8 is the only application available anywhere that can open and repair files containing the most severe forms of V8 corruption.
  • Microsoft Office Importer enhancements continue relentlessly. Recent user interface improvements make it easier than ever to use. It’s no surprise that Microsoft Office Importer’s ability to flawlessly import spreadsheets of any size, with flexible formatting (unachievable with MicroStation), has made it one of the most broadly used MicroStation third-party utilities of all time.
  • RefMerge for V8, the software that automatically merges a design file and any or all of its reference files into one design file, now supports 3D files.
  • Global File Changer’s Modify Text command now allows MicroStation users to make batch changes to text in tags and dimensions — impossible with MicroStation alone. These are just two of the eight recent Modify Text command enhancements.

The facts behind the legend
If you haven’t witnessed it yet for yourself, you’ve probably heard legends about Axiom’s MicroStation Productivity Toolkit speeding up projects, saving time and increasing profits for MicroStation shops around the world every day.

“I love RefManager — I wasn’t looking forward to changing 1,300 reference file attachments manually,” says Chris Seymour-Smith of Capita Percy Thomas.

Here are the benefits that every MicroStation site will get when they own Axiom’s MicroStation Productivity Toolkit:

  • Free product enhancements. Toolkit owners with Axiom Maintenance Plus receive all product enhancements (such as those described earlier) for the version they own (V7 or V8) at no additional cost.
“[With CellManager for V8], we already reached a higher automation level than we dared to dream of,” exclaims Jean-Paul Pors of Philips Medical Systems.
  • Unlimited support. Toolkit owners with Axiom Maintenance Plus are eligible for unlimited support at no additional cost. The entire Axiom team is available for help.
Jason Cosgrove of Volkert & Associates tells us, “All of my experiences with Axiom and the staff, especially technical support, have been outstanding. The technical support staff that we have worked with deserve a special recognition for helping us work through some very difficult problems. Thanks!”
  • Free online training. With Axiom Maintenance Plus, you and your colleagues can participate in online training, scheduled at your convenience, without leaving your desk! Axiom professionals can deliver training to you and your colleagues on any or all MicroStation Productivity Toolkit applications.
“The Axiom training was more than enough for my employees to get started using RefManager. RefManager works very well and the training provided us with the knowledge to use its full capabilities,” says Jorge Serrano of Ameren.
  • Purchasing the full MicroStation Productivity Toolkit saves you money — it’s by far your best value. For instance, if you’re planning to purchase a single-computer license of FileFixer, RefManager and Global File Changer (just three of the applications in Toolkit), you can pay just ten dollars more and receive the entire MicroStation Productivity Toolkit (rather than individual applications). If you think that’s a good deal, the savings are really astounding for site and corporate licenses! If you plan to purchase a site license of FileFixer, RefManager and Global File Changer, pay just ten dollars more and receive a site license of the entire MicroStation Productivity Toolkit!

Jean-Paul Pors of Philips Medical Systems reaches new automation heights with CellManager.

The savings are similar regardless of the individual Toolkit applications you are considering. If you already own Axiom tools, you can upgrade from one, two or three individual applications to the full Toolkit and save a bundle. Hard to believe? Axiom MicroStation Consultants stand ready to answer any questions you might have.

Even if you can’t immediately envision fully utilizing all of the 22 applications in Toolkit for V7 or the 16 applications in Toolkit for V8, pay just ten dollars more and you’ll have the full Toolkit arsenal available whenever you need it.

“I want to thank you and your staff for your exceptional service in getting the V7 and V8 Microsoft Office Importer to me at the drop of a hat. It made a big difference and the job went out on time. Great tool,” declares Richard Odum of Ghyabi & Associates.

That’s why Axiom wants MicroStation Productivity Toolkit at your site.

MicroStation sites around the globe use MicroStation Productivity Toolkit to save time, reduce costs and increase profits.

Add up free on-line training, free enhancements, the entire Axiom team that is available to support your projects and you have compelling reasons why you should own and use MicroStation Productivity Toolkit!

Take it from Bill Stout of Atlantic International Consulting Engineers who said it best, “The only piece of software that I use more than Axiom’s MicroStation Productivity Toolkit is MicroStation itself. This software [Toolkit] has saved me thousands of hours of work.”

Microsoft Office Importer users tell it like it is!

Thursday, 7 June 2007

Clearwater, Florida, USA —It’s summertime here in Florida and that often means sweltering temperatures, long lines at Disney World and bad tan lines. Rather than venture outdoors, I find myself sorting through my e-mail inbox to see what users are saying about using Microsoft Office Importer. Just so you know, Microsoft Office Importer is Axiom’s most popular utility in terms of total number of users, probably because it enables MicroStation users to import and link Excel spreadsheet and Word document data into MicroStation with ease, reliability and exact formatting. Equipment schedules, bills of materials, tabular data, construction notes and the like can all be pasted once and will stay up-to-date in your design file — even when the spreadsheet changes – with no further user interaction, beyond opening that design file.

Need to import spreadsheets into MicroStation? Frustrated with the way you are doing it now? Read on to find out what users are doing to make this process a breeze.

All of the comments that you are about to read are unsolicited accounts about Microsoft Office Importer from real Axiom customers.

David N. Rackmales of the US Army Corps of Engineers said, “[Microsoft] Office Importer is probably the most intuitive, reliable and user-friendly program or add-on I’ve ever used. Training for the users here takes about a minute.”

I believe it! Aside from being easy to use, Microsoft Office Importer is also a huge time-saver when it comes to importing Word documents and Excel spreadsheet data.

Abe Arollo of Aztec Engineering declares, “Without Microsoft Office Importer, importing spreadsheets was a two-step process that took two people (a designer and a CAD drafter) a minimum of two hours on a simple Excel spreadsheet to a maximum of five hours on a complex spreadsheet.”

Tom Orner of EMCS, Incorporated also noticed Microsoft Office Importer’s time-saving benefits. He remarks, “This is an amazing tool. It easily saved us 75% to 90% of the time spent on importing our quantity sheets.”

Those savings of time do add up! One customer reported that, as a result of using Microsoft Office Importer, his company “saves $20,000 per year.”

Microsoft Office Importer also allows users to control almost any aspect of the document or spreadsheet data that they have imported into their design file. Color, weight, level, style, font, text size and other attributes can all be modified in Microsoft Office Importer’s settings. With these settings, users can ensure that their documents and spreadsheets will be imported to their exact specifications.

Another feature of Microsoft Office Importer is that it maintains the formatting of an Excel spreadsheet or Word document when either is imported into MicroStation. For example, text in the spreadsheet that is vertical remains vertical when imported into MicroStation. The ability to modify symbology and maintain formatting makes Microsoft Office Importer an extremely valuable tool for many MicroStation users.

Greg Mullins of Mullins & Associates claims, “Before [Microsoft Office] Importer, [the engineers] had to retype all their spreadsheets and Word documents in MicroStation. Now they simply import the text with perfect formatting.”

Thanks to everyone who wrote to me with all your comments! It’s feedback like that and customer input that drive our product development here at Axiom, so keep it coming! I just want to add, while e-mails are nice, a “YouTube” (www.youtube.com) testimonial about how Microsoft Office Importer saves you time would be spectacular!

An interview with Crispell-Snyder’s Chris Elvin

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, USA — We at Axiom meet interesting, dedicated MicroStation users every day. This month, we’d like you to meet Chris Elvin, CAD Administrator for Crispell-Snyder, Incorporated of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

“Give someone a product that leaves them thinking of you and they’ll come back,” states 13-year Civil Engineering veteran, Chris Elvin, CAD Administrator for Crispell-Snyder, Incorporated of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

MicroStation Today: Why do you feel your company’s work stands out from the rest?
Chris: It’s a challenge to any firm to make sure they produce products in a timely manner and in a way that’s also aesthetically pleasing. I feel this is something that’s been lost because we’re in the mechanical age. I’d like to see more firms focusing on “graphic standards” that are concerned with the look and the style of the products. That approach sets our company apart and has brought us a level of return business that is vital to us.

MST: What led to your company choosing that approach?
Chris: It started like this. My company, Crispell-Snyder, Incorporated, made the decision to go with MicroStation in the early 1990s for two reasons, 1) for Department of Transportation compatibility and 2) because MicroStation is much more customizable than other CAD programs. This was crucial to us because, before CAD, our company had created board drawings that were unique to us and our customers liked them. [Editor's note: For the benefit of those under the age of 30, we thought we'd mention that before the advent of CAD software, designing was done on paper using a drafting table. These tables were often called "drawing boards" or simply "boards".] We wanted a CAD program that could recreate the look of our board drawings and MicroStation was able to do that.

MST: What makes your work so unique?
Chris: Aesthetics. Our work looks good. In my experience, aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand. The better the drawings look, the more functional they’ll be. From the beginning, our customers have appreciated our attention to detail (like the use of line weights and minimal abbreviations). In engineering, you can go to anybody and get a drawing, but are they going to give you plan sheets that are easy to use, easy to read and nice to look at?

MST: Do you really think how a drawing looks is that important?
Chris: Yes. A drawing has to be aesthetically pleasing. It has to be easy to look at. If you want your product to stand out, you can’t underestimate this point. We’ve proven that following this philosophy promotes return business — give someone a product that leaves them thinking of you and they’ll come back.

MST: That’s great advice. What else do you focus on in your position?
Chris: CAD standards library creation, management and enforcement are probably the largest use of my time. CAD software compatibility is also a big issue, as not many of our subconsultants and clients are MicroStation users. Staying billable is important to me. A good CAD Administrator must be a proficient user and one who takes the lead and sets the example. Anything to make handling libraries, files and corruption faster and easier is going to give me the time I need to be productive and in the end, productivity is what really matters. CellManager, for example, makes tedious cell library maintenance a lot simpler with the ability to split large libraries into separate, optimized libraries for different groups of users. The ability to quickly combine cell libraries is great, especially for archiving.

Google Earth’s user interface showing how a design can be referenced to satellite imagery to show drawings in a more realistic setting.

MST: What do you predict will be the “next big thing” in CAD?
Chris: Object-oriented design is obviously the next big thing in civil design. CAD, in the civil arena, must deliver a more intelligent product in a world of GIS (Geographic Information System), BIM (Building Information Modeling) and Google Earth.

MST: Tell us a little about your background.
Chris: I have been working in the Civil Engineering arena for over 13 years. My degree is in Information Technology and Business Education.

MST: Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Chris: I’ll be doing the same thing, only better. I am fortunate to be in a profession that I enjoy, creating a product that I am proud of.

MST: If you wish you had written one book, what would it be?
Chris: The Bible. It is, after all, a bestseller.

MST: Thank you so much for your time today Chris!

New release: DgnQuickPick now has the ability to open models — instantly!

Thursday, 7 June 2007

New file tree structure offers amazing new features to save users’ time.

Clearwater, Florida, USA — Since its initial release in January 2006, DgnQuickPick has been the only MicroStation add-on that gives users the ability to select the MicroStation file they want to open with one mouse click.

Figure 1: The “DgnQuickPick File Tree” (V7 version) displays all the reference files attached to each design file in the tree. Users can open design files and reference files, straight from the tree.

This month, Axiom announced that the latest releases of DgnQuickPick — version 2.0 for MicroStation V7 and version 8.4 for MicroStation V8 — have undergone a complete overhaul and now offer users the choice between two different user interfaces. Users can still work with the familiar tabbed list, but now they also have the option of selecting files from a tree-style user interface.

DgnQuickPick gives V7 and V8 users the ability to view and open all the reference files attached to any given design file, straight from a single, simple tree (See Figures 1 and 2). What’s more, the tree-style user interface allows DgnQuickPick for V8 users to select models.

Figure 2: The “DgnQuickPick Model Tree” (DgnQuickPick for V8) allows users to select and open any reference file or model in the tree.

Figure 3: 3D models, read-only files, V7 design files, missing reference files and unsupported files are all displayed in the DgnQuickPick tree-style user interface with descriptive icons.

The tree-style user interface employs a hierarchy similar to Windows Explorer. Design files are first in the hierarchy, models (V8 only) are on the second “level” of the hierarchy and reference files are on the third “level”.

DgnQuickPick for V8 users can even utilize the tree to view the contents of any cell library by simply expanding it (clicking on the + icon, just like in Windows Explorer).

This will display all the cells in the library.

The tree-style user interface displays icons, providing users with more information about the files in their list. Read-only files display with a lock icon. 3D design files (or models in V8) display with a white cube icon. Missing reference file attachments are displayed with a special “missing reference” icon. DgnQuickPick for V8 uses a Bentley “B” icon to indicate V7 design files and the AutoCAD logo icon for DWG files. Unsupported file types are displayed with an “unrecognized file” icon. This includes files not recognized as MicroStation V7 or V8 design files, cell libraries or DGN libraries. See Figure 3 for an example of these icons.

Figure 4: DgnQuickPick users can right-click on an item in their list and select any one of these actions.

Users can now also take advantage of right-click menu options for files or models in their list. From the right-click menu, a user can open a file, attach a file as a reference to the active file, detach a reference file or execute predefined key-in commands.

Chris Borales, product manager for DgnQuickPick says, “DgnQuickPick users are going to find the new user interface more helpful and more intuitive. Not only does it give them instant access to any project design file or model, it also displays important information about the design files and models listed. With DgnQuickPick, users can quickly open any file or model, right from the tree. This ability saves them from browsing everywhere for a file or model to open it.”

Since January 2006, DgnQuickPick has provided users a way to get around the task of browsing for their design files and selecting them to be opened. Now, with the release of versions 2.0 (V7) and 8.4 (V8), users can select their files using either the familiar tabbed list or the new tree-style user interface. Chris Borales adds, “These are exciting releases! With the added functionality, users are going to love DgnQuickPick even more!”

Tips & Tricks — Launch any .ma or .exe from the Axiom menu.

By Rick Sewell, Customer Support
The Axiom Support Department receives a lot of mail asking about modifying the Axiom pull-down menu. One typical request is from CAD managers who want to remove or rearrange products on the Axiom pull-down menu so it looks just right for their particular users.

In addition to being able to modify the existing contents of the Axiom pull-down menu, you can load other applications from it, including MicroStation applications and Windows executables.

Axiom pull-down menu basics
What displays on your Axiom pull-down menu is determined by the contents of a simple text file. This text file is called “aximenu.cfg”. This file can be modified in various ways to customize the Axiom pull-down menu.

The “aximenu.cfg” file is located in the “aximenu” folder that is directly below your Axiom base directory (the location where you installed your Axiom products). The default location for the Axiom base directory for V7 is “C:Program FilesAxiomV7″ and for V8 the location is “C:Program FilesAxiomV8″.

How to load an additional MicroStation application from your Axiom pull-down menu
Here is an example of what a section of the current (default) “aximenu” file looks like and what the Axiom pull-down menu in MicroStation looks like as a result:

Figure 1: A V8 “aximenu.cfg” file with its corresponding Axiom pull-down menu display

Notice that for every product displayed in the menu on the right, there are two lines driving it from the “aximenu.cfg” file shown on the left.

The “#” that precedes the first line for every product in the “aximenu.cfg” file is used to indicate that the text or other characters immediately after it will be displayed on the Axiom pull-down menu. [Exception: The ~ symbol does not display. It tells the computer that the letter immediately following is also the hot key for the given application.] The second line (the line immediately after the line starting with the “#”) defines the application to be loaded when you select the item from the menu.
For example, if you wanted the Axiom pull-down menu to display “Chicken” and you wanted to load “chicken.ma” you would enter the following two lines into the “aximenu.cfg” file:

#Chicken
C:Program FilesPoultrychicken.ma

In this example, “C:Program FilesPoultry” is the location of chicken.ma.

How to load a Windows application from your Axiom pull-down menu
Setting up to load a Windows application from the Axiom pull-down menu is essentially done the same way as adding a MicroStation application to load from the menu. The difference is, on the line where specifying the application to be loaded, you must precede the path to the file with “WIN:”. For example, if you want the Axiom pull-down menu to display “Windows Application” and you want to load “windowsapp.exe”, you would enter the following two lines into the “aximenu.cfg” file:

#Windows Application
WIN:”C:Program FilesWindowsAppwindowsapp.exe”

In this example, “C:Program FilesWindowsApp” is the location of windowsapp.exe.
