Preventing chimney disasters with Walkinside.
Santa Claus shares visualization
secrets on increasing delivery operation productivity.
NORTH POLE, ARCTIC CIRCLE
From the icy tundra of the North Pole, Santa Claus
the always hip, mythical and mystical purveyor of holiday
glee commands one of the largest MicroStation design
teams in the world. With a shop consisting of over two-thousand
full-time designers, CAD managers and technicians, Santa Claus
has no time to waste on time-consuming tasks and redundant

| Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus send their Seasons
Greetings to the entire MicroStation community. |
Last year, MicroStation Today had the privilege to
meet with Mr. Claus to discuss how he incorporated Axiom's
MicroStation Productivity Toolkit and LearningBay
to ensure all aspects of his operation are at full-production
potential. This year, Mr. Claus wants to share with us the
benefits of incorporating 3D visualization into the planning
and execution of on-time holiday gift distribution and how
he avoids deadline-threatening setbacks.
MicroStation Today: Mr. Claus,
thank you for speaking with us again.
Santa: No problem! I like
you guys. You guys are cool. I always have a good time when
we hang out. We always get crunk [Editorial note: "crunk"
is a slang term meaning "having a good ol' time."]
MicroStation Today: Uh
Santa
I don't think my editor needs to know about that.
Santa: Hogwash! That is
the reason why I do these. When I met you down at the Arctic
Circle MicroStation Users (ACMU) meeting, I was very impressed
with your "networking" abilities. Know what I mean?
Anywho, I want to let the world know about how we have incorporated
Walkinside, the premier 3D visualization solution for
MicroStation, into our workflow. I call it a solution because
it solves a terribly embarrassing potential problem for us.
MicroStation Today: What problem
is that?
Santa: Well, as you know,
my favorite method of entry to good children's homes is via
a fireplace or chimney. Given my physical diameter, I sometimes
encounter some spots that could be quite troublesome. Using
Walkinside I can determine whether I will fit into
all the houses I plan on visiting in advance.
MicroStation Today: Really?
How so?
Santa: For starters, we
go ahead and convert all our models into virtual reality environments
using Walkinside. We use a scale model of myself to
see if I would fit into all the openings I will need to enter.
This process is so important, that I have even established
an entire department in my organization to handle it. This
toy distribution business is cutthroat and I don't have time
to make mistakes. I need to know as much as I can before I
hit the road on Christmas Eve, know what I mean?
Me losing weight is not an option. I do have an image to
maintain. So, I need to know all the details as to where I
am getting, so I can avoid embarrassing moments, like the
incident in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1987. I got stuck in
a chimney for 3 hours. If my team would've only had Walkinside
to double-check the size of that chimney, I would've known
to find an alternate method of entry. I tell you, the fire
department there didn't let me live it down for weeks. The
local media would've had a field day! Luckily we have great
lawyers [laughs].
The bottom line is that by using Walkinside, I can
save myself from these uncomfortable moments and streamline
my delivery to its fullest.
Walkinside not only serves as a great tool to gauge
the relative size of openings, it also comes in handy during
the conceptual stage of a design, to see what a facility will
look like once it is built. Also, we use Walkinside to manage
our facilities and ensure that our facility maintenance department
always is up to date on the equipment they need to maintain.
Walkinside has applications throughout the project
lifecycle.
MicroStation Today: Well thanks
Mr. Claus. It's always a pleasure to chat with you.
Santa: No problem. Now
let's go get some chow. Mrs. Claus is cooking up some of that
curry chicken you liked last year.
